How to Train To Become a Better Quarterback

Time is limited and there’s only some of it that you can put into your improvement day in and day out. So it’s essential that you know how to train to become a better quarterback. You can put in hours of activity, but make sure you are improving within all the right areas to better predict your own future success.

In this post, we’ll discuss how you can become stronger, be more explosive, and be faster as a quarterback. According to a study conducted in 2015, 95% of the NFL quarterbacks have reportedly played multiple sports and 75% of these quarterbacks play at least three or more sports in high school. If you only play one sport, there’s a high chance you might experience burnout, injure more importantly may negatively impact your likelihood to play at the next level.

Here’s what you need to become a better quarterback:

Being a Better Athlete

Quarterbacks, in general, have a tendency to focus only on training as a quarterback in comparison to improving as an overall athlete. This can cause serious issues and even injuries if you tend to focus only on your strengths as a quarterback rather than an athlete. Especially because oftentimes the quarterback is the most athletic or one of the most athletic players on the team.

This is why in my 3-month program, I’ve designed it specifically for you to help you become a better athlete as I know it’ll help you become a great quarterback. You’ll be more explosive, have better body control, understand how to better change direction and so much more if you follow the specifics of this course. Now back to your training.

Knowing what’s Important

The reality is most teams have offensive lines that are going to struggle. The protection is not always going to be there and as a quarterback, you need to be prepared to respond when the offensive line is not able to block the defense.

If you are looking to play at the next level you will have to be able to still play great even if the offensive line is not doing its job. Coaches are looking for guys who are able to make plays when there is some adversity put in front of them. So training to be able to be quick, throw on the run, be durable, and balanced is critical to help you continue to rise to higher levels.

Essentials to Have as a Quarterback

Body Control

In order for you to make plays, you need to have good overall body control and this is what you should focus on when training as a quarterback. In order to train this, you should be working on landing, jumping, cutting, balance, etc.

Better Balance

When you are on the field, you should have a better body balance to help you maneuver swiftly as a quarterback. More single-leg and single-arm exercises.

Direction Change

As a quarterback, your change of direction needs to be great as well. This allows you to gauge what’s happening on the field quicker and helps you make your moves quickly.

Throw on the Run

A quarterback should have the skill of throwing a ball on the run. All the skills mentioned above will come into play if you want to be able to throw on the run.

Quick Release

When training to become a better quarterback, it’s important to work on your throwing release. A quick and accurate throwing release will help you immensely as a quarterback.

Are bench press and shoulder press enough?

Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of quarterbacks who focus so much on bench press and shoulder press when training to become better. You should know that there are 32 muscles in your arms and shoulders. All of these muscles can be trained in different ways and bench press/shoulder press does not train all those muscles.

You should not get caught up in training a few muscle groups and ignoring the others. It’ll create a negative impact on your overall performance as a quarterback. There should be variability in the exercises and make sure you are training the back, doing crawls, planks, pull-ups, and much more. I think pull-ups are a super underrated exercise because it is an overhead movement and the lat muscle is one of the biggest in the body.

Our 3 Months Program

This program is specifically designed and updated from time to time to help you on your journey to becoming a better quarterback. This program focuses on the following:

  • Overall Athleticism
  • Improving throwing on the run
  • Improving your release
  • Complete breakdowns
  • Throwing velocity, distance and accuracy

The focus of this program is to create opportunities for you on the field. If you are someone who can escape the pocket and throw on the run a little more, there are teams that have packages specially designed for you.

Final thoughts

You have to know that joining the ranks in Division 1 or NFL as a quarterback will demand a consistent grind from you. You have to know how to train to become a better quarterback, whether it is our 3-month program or a different program. I challenge you to commit to something this offseason that will help you improve your performance.

Just make sure to improve your lower body as well as your upper body. Work on balance, jumping, and sprinting in order to improve your lower body power. When it comes to force production a lot of the overall power will come from the lower body and the core so make sure to train that along with the upper body.

Have a great day!
